  13.      This is a quick guide, for users of earlier versions of VDE, to noticable 
  14. changes in operation of VDE since version 1.54.  Please check VDE.REF and 
  15. VINST.REF for full details.

  19.      *  A new "Auto Format" mode (command ^OM or {Text:auto fmT}) provides 
  20. continuous reformatting of text during typing or editing, so that manual 
  21. reformat (^B) is unnecessary.  See AUTO FORMAT.
  22.  
  23.      *  A new "Right Justify" mode (command ^OJ or {Text:Justify}) inserts 
  24. spaces in text as necessary so that formatting leaves an even right margin.  
  25. See JUSTIFICATION.

  27.      *  A new paragraph tab command (^OG) allows setting a temporary indent.  
  28. See INDENTING.

  30.      *  Command changes: The rename work command has been changed from ^KN to 
  31. ^KE.  (^KN will still work for now, but is reserved for other purposes in the 
  32. future.)  The proportional mode command has been changed from ^OJ to ^OK, 
  33. since ^OJ is now the right justify command.

  35.      *  Undelete (^U) can now be used repeatedly to recover prior deletions.  
  36. See UNDELETION.

  38.      *  The MenuBar mode has been revised: VDE commands now work in MenuBar 
  39. mode as well.  (A new choice {Misc:Escape} can access Esc commands.)  Also, a 
  40. new {User:} menu bar can contain five new commands of your choice.  See 
  41. OPERATING MODES.

  43.      *  The preview command (^OD) now shows page numbers, and indicates page 
  44. breaks with dotted lines on screen.  See PAGE PREVIEW.
  45.  
  46.      *  To make hyphenation easier, VDE now uses conditional or "soft" 
  47. hyphens, entered with the command ^P-.  See HYPHENATION.
  48.  
  49.      *  There is a new file mode /U ("U"nformatted), which produces files 
  50. without soft carriage returns.  See FILE MODES.  (The old trick of setting the 
  51. right margin to 0 and reformatting to remove all soft returns is no longer 
  52. needed, or supported.)

  54.      *  Two new macro commands have been added:
  55.      Esc* is a "universal toggle set", allowing a macro to specify any status 
  56. for Insert, Justify, and other toggles.  See TOGGLE CONTROL.
  57.      Esc$ allows you to control continued execution of a macro when an error 
  58. occurs.  See MACRO PROGRAMMING.
  59.  
  60.      *  The file browser (^KF) can now handle more files; the screen will 
  61. scroll if the cursor is moved past the end of the display.
  62.  
  63.      *  The print command (^KP) now allows headers on the left side of the 
  64. page, using the "<" character.  See PRINTING.
  65.  
  66.      *  Manual reformat (^B) now acts upon the entire paragraph, not just from 
  67. the cursor line downward.

  69.      *  The Match file function (AltM) now compares word by word, ignoring 
  70. formatting differences in documents (line length, word spacing, etc).  In /N 
  71. mode, it is still an exact character by character match.  Also, when files 
  72. match, it finishes at the end of the file (no longer a "not found" message).

  74.      *  The [Esc] key can now be used (like ^U) to escape from all input 
  75. prompts throughout VDE (except macro definitions), canceling the operation in 
  76. progress.

  81.      *  A new main menu item "menu<B>ar mode" lets you customize the new 
  82. "User" menu bar to contain 5 commands of your choice.  (The choice for MenuBar 
  83. vs Command mode has also been moved here from the options section.)

  85.      *  New user options allow for a choice of default status for auto format, 
  86. double spacing, and proportional spacing.

  88.      *  For convenience, graphic character sets (for the AltG command) can 
  89. also now be stored and retrieved as disk files (.VDG).

  91.      *  The Macro and Function key editing process now allows copying (and 
  92. thus moving) a definition from one key to another.

  94.      *  Proportional character widths are now measured in 1/360" (not 1/256" 
  95. as before) for compatibility with most printers.
  96.  
  97.      *  The computer installation now supports the Paradise VGA+ video card as 
  98. a choice for 132-column mode operation (AltA).

  100.      *  The printer installation now allows you to specify different ports 
  101. (e.g., LPT2) on systems with several printers.  (Note: VINST will read .VDP 
  102. files from versions 1.52 to 1.54 of VDE as well.  Just write them back out 
  103. again to convert them to 1.60 format, for use with VDE's AltU command.)

  105.      *  Printer code entry now allows entering a single quote (`) + character 
  106. instead of a hex value, and the use of [BkSp] as a correction key.
